Enterprise risk management’s version of the Serenity Prayer

June 30, 2021

You are likely familiar with the serenity prayer, even if you do not know it by that name. There are different versions, but essentially it says, “May I have the courage to change what I can, the serenity to accept what I can’t, and the wisdom to know the difference.”

If that sounds familiar, you may have a strong connection to enterprise risk management (ERM). ERM helps local government and utility leaders address specific risks by assessing and mitigating what is within the organization’s control and managing the risks that are not. Understanding what you can really affect as a utility manager or department director is akin to identifying your true reach.

In this recent AWWA Journal article co-authored by Raftelis Senior Manager Seth Garrison, the benefits of ERM are demonstrated through a number of utility experiences. Check out the article here (AWWA login required for free access).
