Local governments need creative and dynamic leaders who are prepared to break through the “we’ve always done it this way” mindset to help communities thrive. Transformative leaders build resilient organizations that are unafraid to try new things, communicate effectively, and encourage empathy throughout the organization.
Authentic Leadership
Prior to meeting in person, participants will be asked to consider a prior leadership or behavioral style assessment that they have completed, and come prepared to discuss the insights and experience it spurred. (An optional DiSC® Management profile assessment and one-on-one debrief session is available for participants for an additional $150 fee). Participants will explore their unique leadership strengths and prior leadership experiences to gain insights about how to use these strengths to cultivate strong teams and organizations.
Strategic Planning and Visioning
Participants will learn the purpose and process for developing the vision and strategic priorities for a local government organization. This includes the primary components of a strategic plan, tools and techniques for community engagement in the strategic planning process, developing consensus on vision and strategic priorities, and methods for operationalizing and implementing strategic plans once they are developed.
Communication
Transformative leadership requires effective and inclusive communication. Through research and real-world examples, participants will explore strategies for communicating effectively with organizational staff and stakeholders, elected officials, and the community at-large.
Innovation and Change Management
Participants will develop a practical understanding of leading innovation and change management concepts so that they can be successful champions of change and promote a culture of innovation within their organizations. Key concepts that will be covered leveraging creative solutions and behavioral insights to promote change, understanding organizational and individual readiness for change, and methods for building investment and buy-in with an organization.
People working in all areas of local government, who aspire to or are currently in leadership positions, are encouraged to apply.
